Ridiculous Tunes

August 14th, 2008

Due to a recent hard drive failure I lost a lot of the working project files for some songs I was messing with. Frustrating to say the least, but for a few of the songs I made mp3s at different stages of tinkering. I figured since the files are pretty much gone forever I might as well post some of them.

The first song is a mashup I started messing with after hearing a friend complain about how they were not into MIA’s Paper Planes in it’s original version or any of the subsequent remixes. Around that same time I picked up one of Chloe’s latest records on Kill The DJ and thought one of them would work really well backing the vocals for Paper Planes.

The second is an edit I did of that Kanye / Daft Punk collaboration ‘Stronger’. I did a quick edit so I had it as an instrumental and at around 130bpm so I could use it in one of the earlier Good Morning Stardust mixes.

Mental Black Hole

August 9th, 2008

At the beginning of Opening Ceremony’s 72 hour Olympic inspired retail marathon, the DJ played Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody?” to a bunch of drunks like my friends and me who arrived much too early for Hercules and Love Affair, but not too early to pre-game for Friday night.

After making the sign of the cross (†) and saying “R.I.P Aaliyah”, as I must do whenever her name or music is mentioned or played, we discussed the absurdity of the music video, with its motorcycles, secret hideouts, hawks, and giant projections of Eddie Murphy on mirrored walls.

So, on that topic of strange music videos with movie tie-ins, here is a much different video that will probably do a fair amount of harm to your mind. If you know of anything more damaging, post the link in the comments, please.

Happy Birthday (Party) Leigh!

August 6th, 2008

I know your birthday was actually the other day when you were off fighting spiders in a tropical location, but happy birthday all the same. The party was fun and the birthday cupcakes tasted like butter (which works pretty well until you get to the halfway point).

The impromptu photo shoot was also very chic and elegant. Scott was my assistant.

But every time I grab the ring it’s always–BRASS!

Some videos get it so right. There is so much glamor in these two that it makes me feel like I’ve broken a Glittercake Fabulous Society rule for eating a bag of Gardetto’s.

Record Of The Week: The Limited

July 11th, 2008

The album opens up with an introduction*. The song is more or less a sound check for the mood, vibe and atmosphere of the songs to follow on The Limited - Melee Beats album of compiled work from the past few years’ releases. The songs mainly fall within the upbeat spectrums of French House, New Disco and Electro with a few slower paced exceptions like Never See. The nice thing about all of the tracks is the production quality that leaves you feeling like these tunes could have been culled from an era when similar producers were at their peak and you are just late in discovering them.

A good portion of the material is sprinkled with vocals. The songs’ lyrics range from being more raw and honest as in Coming Out Tonight to filtered and set more within the upbeat melodies.

But all of this musical evidence begs a question. Is Nic Bertino’s Parisian citizenship the only thing missing in this picture? It would seem that with his Melee Beats productions he is well on his way to being on par with all the great French House names.

My favorite tune is Wondering. Sure you could freak out to other songs like Girlhype or Distraction, but for me Wondering takes the cake. Just listen to it. Go to his site and download it, don’t bother with any ‘previewing’ process.

Melee Beats was also kind enough to spare some time for an interview. Click to hear what he had to say.

Record Of The Week: Ai022LP

June 27th, 2008

For it’s 22nd release UK label Ai Records offers up a various artists disc on clear polka dot vinyl. Present on the disc are The Third Man, Najem Sworb and Plant43 who each provide two tracks each. All of these artists were also part of the label’s recent polka-dot sleeved series of colored clear vinyl EPs which are worth hunting down.

Over all this release is a good representation of the current sound and spirit of the label. Smart clicky subtle electro (electro electro) amongst a palette of rich synthetic melodies. This collection of songs would be playing in Rick Deckard’s headphones. I’ve been following this label since the Claro Intelecto release and it only seems to get stronger and more consistent. In all honesty this is more a label recommendation than a specific release review.

My favorite tune is Padreduct by Najem Sworb. This is partly due to it reminding me of older late 90s Ken Ishii in some updated way. I guess the song is all about memory or indistinct feeling.

Try Ai Record’s for the limited vinyl or buy digitally at Beatport or Bleep.
