Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood

February 27th, 2008

I ended up seeing Eric Clapton last evening. And accidentally at that. I was not planning on going to the concert but a confusing conversation with a friend ended up making it happen.

The conversation went something like this:

Friend: Eric Clapton?
Me: What?
Friend: Do you know Eric Clapton?
Me: I would probably recognize him if I saw him.
Friend: Answer the question.
Me: What?
Friend: Okay, meet me at Madison Square Garden around 7.

Apparently Warner Brothers is interested in signing my friends’ band and as a part of the courting ritual they treated them and their guests (myself for example) to a concert and dinner.

I got to have a good look at Madison Square Garden for the first time, and the seats offered a good view of the performance. Steve Winwood shared the stage with Clapton and my favorite part of the set was when Winwood played Georgia On My Mind solo. Aside from that highlight the show was an assortment of extended jams with some better known hits mixed in.

After the show we took a limousine over to our dining spot. As a penalty for ordering a non-dairy item in a nice uptown Italian restaurant my dish was spiked with hot sauce. I made it 3/4 through my dish before deciding I would start to cry if I kept eating. After the lava, I cooled my insides down with White Peach Sorbet for dessert.

Our hosts for the evening were Tom and Craig and over all they seemed like pretty down to earth friendly people. Throughout dinner I overheard stories about the eccentricities and quirks of past WB recording artists and miscellaneous comments about the type of artists the label is currently taking an interest in.

All in all it was an educational evening, as I was unaware of the fact that new (non major/mainstream)artists were still courted to this degree in this day and age. With the decline of the music industry I had assumed that the majors were being a bit more conservative.
