A moderately priced headache.

February 23rd, 2008

I can not wait to go to Turntable Lab tomorrow afternoon. And no, not because there is some new amazing record I need to pick up. I have to go to unload this piece of garbage USB turntable I got their earlier today.

The idea was to get a simple USB turntable that I could use to set up a station for recording my vinyl so I could have a digital back up of my collection. I went with the Ion USB Turntable because it was fairly priced, had a straightforward set up and was to be seemingly easy to use. Well obviously it was too good to be true.

I was met with fussy connectivity and distortion any time I attempted to record. A visit to the support site proved to be even more disheartening as countless others have had the same issue with no legitimate fix supplied by the company.

Now I will do what I should have in the first place - gotten an extra ‘regular’ turntable and used RCA cables to a line in. It’s a bit more roundabout but it is proven effective. It always works for recording mixes after all.

It’s unfortunate that this post could not have been about some new great piece of music, but all the same I figured I should put up a warning sign to other music enthusiasts considering a more efficient means of digitizing their vinyl.
