Record Of The Week: In Other Words
June 13th, 2008
Ian Pooley hales from Frankfurt but I tend to associate him with the French House crowd for some reason. I guess this may be due to the fact that he was one of the consistent names to look for when the sound was on the rise in the late 90s. From Roller Skate Disco to Chord Memory to Sundowner to 900 Degrees his songs have always kept my interest peaked.
In Other Words sort of snuck up on me, given that his output seemed to drop a bit over the past year or two. I guess this was because he was busy on the album and could not bother with a few random singles to fill the year with. It’s pretty much what you would expect from Pooley. And I don’t mean that in the predictable sense, but more so the dependable. The only note I would make is that the album is more on the dreamier softer side of the house spectrum.
The album also features a couple of guest vocalists. Like the track Learn, which features Robert Owens (Who I first took a liking too via the collaboration with London Elektricity a few years back). Also the slight R&B touch on Steppin’ Out works pretty well.
My favorite tune is It’s You. It has that nice washed out dreamy background with enough of a beat in the foreground to work in a set. The very slight use of vocals is a nice touch too. I plan on using it this song a mix at some point.
