Record Of The Week: Bake Sale

May 16th, 2008

Really. What is wrong with these guys? There are so many terrible directions The Cool Kids could have gone in and gotten plenty of credit and dough from mass America. These days it seems like the formula for hip hop is not to actually make hip hop, but to make 3 minute commercials for superficial shit over a cheesy looped beat and then say it is hip hop.

A third of the effort could have been put forth and these tunes would still be really good. So thank goodness for the full dose on Bake Sale. This album is fresh air. Consistent from start to finish. It’s like sticking your head out a window after the end of an in-door bean eating competition.

My favorite tune is Black Mags. This song is about riding a bicycle. Really, what other modern artist can make a track about bikes so amazing? I want to ride bikes. I want to be back in a late 80s / early 90s roller rink and listen to this while I take a break to roll over and play Street Fighter.

Here is some remix they did: Strangers (The Cool Kids Remix)

*The Bake Sale is now available at Turntable Lab

Side note: If you are into this album and live in the city you should check out my pal Lindsey’s party on Wednesdays called The Hump. Also the same dude (Grotesk) who did the art for this Cool Kids album also does the flyer art for her party and it is amazing.
