Record Of The Week: Santogold
April 25th, 2008
Is this a new genre of music? Lower East Side Pop? A pop album we do not have to call a guilty pleasure to justify listening to because it has legitimate substance and talent? In any event, this album truly is a melting pot much like the neighborhood.
Santi White has taken some time away from penning and co-producing for other artists to bring all her diverse influences together in one nice debut package. Santogold is an album that brings together many different people, sounds, inspirations, backgrounds and ideas. While listening to the album you can maybe get a sense of what to expect from the next track in terms of spirit, but not style. A quick list of genres and influences include: Dub, Rock, Hip Hop, R & B, Two Tone, 80s Teen Vampire Movie Soundtrack
It’s a wonder that the album does not come across as completely schizophrenic. It just works and it sounds like a lot of fun.
My favorite tune is Unstoppable. I love the beat, the tempo, the pop and hiss percussion and the jog around the world with fists in the air empowering chorus.
