Record Of The Week: In Ghost Colours
March 21st, 2008
The craftsmen from Melbourne are back with a new album, and it was definitely worth the four year wait. For the most part it is the same Cut Copy that gave us Bright Like Neon Love, although the album has more of a fluid nature to it, playing out much like a deejay mix.
In it’s 50 some minutes the album showcases very strong themes and reoccurring melodies, with the occasional cinematic interlude. The songs are upbeat, but haunting. Spacey and electric but with great acoustic sensibility in their use of guitars and percussion. All in all a successful merging of many different worlds and feelings.
Great new songs surround already familiar anthems like Hearts On Fire, which seems to have been slightly re-recorded for the album. Beyond the familiar there are plenty of new hits and anthems to pull from their new galaxy of sounds.
My favorite song is Nobody Lost Nobody Found (just barely beating out Far Away), a lilting idyllic tune that will make you either want to dance with your eyes closed or lay in the grass with a sufficient amount of spiked lemonade at your side.
This is an album that has the potential to affect your head, heart and feet. Beware - this album will be on indefinite repeat. Cut Copy’s In Ghost Colours is out April 8th on Modular Records. Order it here, or dig it up on iTunes.
