The KLF - 3 a.m. Eternal

From Wikipedia:

On 12 February 1992, The KLF and crust punk group Extreme Noise Terror performed a live version of “3 a.m. Eternal” at the BRIT Awards, the British Phonographic Industry’s annual awards show; a “violently antagonistic performance” in front of “a stunned music-business audience”. Drummond and Cauty had planned to throw buckets of sheep’s blood over the audience, but were prevented from doing so due to opposition from BBC lawyers and “hardcore vegans” Extreme Noise Terror. The performance was instead garnished by a limping, kilted, cigar-chomping Drummond firing blanks from an automatic weapon over the heads of the crowd. As the band left the stage, The KLF’s promoter and narrator Scott Piering announced over the PA system that “The KLF have now left the music business”. Later in the evening the band dumped a dead sheep with the message “I died for ewe—bon appetit” tied around its waist at the entrance to one of the post-ceremony parties.

Record of the Week: Seaside Rock

September 12th, 2008

Apparently Peter Bjorn & John are taking a moment to write some instrumental love songs to different places they have visited. Their signature melodies have had the pop elements stripped back quite a bit - the record plays more like a soundtrack to a foreign film. Seaside Rock will appeal to fans of Mum and Tortoise and confuse people who are looking for another Writer’s Block. For me personally the record passed an important test since I was able to zone out while drawing listening to it on repeat.

Occasionally one of the ten dedications has a monologue spoken over the music. My favorite of which is Norrlands Riviera. The part where she pauses to sip tea is very charming. The backing music is especially sparse but effective in a dreamy sort of way.

This will be available on vinyl and download at the end of the month.

Record of the Week: Cross The Dancefloor

September 5th, 2008

I just picked Treasure Finger’s Cross The Dancefloor EP on vinyl at the lab today. I’ve had the digital promo for a few weeks now, but was on the look out for the actual wax. I figured that given the timing I should make this the record of the week. There is not too much to say since it is more or less a remix EP. But it’s strength lies in the fact that each version is very strong on it’s own and will appeal to a varied audience.

My favorite version is probably the Lifelike Remix. All of Lifelike’s originals err on the exceptional side, and the same can be said of his remix work. I also used the tune in the last Good Morning Stardust mix.

Treasure Fingers also had a few things posted on his site for free download:

Snowden - Anti Anti (Treasure Fingers Remix) (download)
Fegie - Glamerous (Treasure Fingers Remix) (download)
Treasure Fingers - 40 Minutes In The Champagne Room Mix (download)
Treasure Fingers - XM Radio Mix (download)

Lively Lykke Li

August 29th, 2008

I finally was able to see Lykke Li live last night. I had been eager to hear and see more of her after connecting the dots from Robyn to Kleerup to Kleerup’s production on some of the new Lykke Li material.

This was also my first time going to the recently opened Le Poisson Rouge venue. I liked the circular set up around the stage. It reminded me of the Nirvana / Pearl Jam type of MTV Unplugged set up. I was watching from the sound booth though and unfortunately had part of a large pillar obstructing my view, but that was okay since I could still hear just fine. She performed, sang and magaphoned a healthy amount of her material with a lot of enthusiasm.

And yes she covered a Tribe tune for her encore which was fun. See her if you have the chance. She is visiting all the way from Stockholm after all.

Help-A-Critter

August 17th, 2008

I noticed these guys in a shop window while walking around today. A batch of kittens were rescued from death and are available for adoption at the Social Tees shop on 4th Street between 1st and 2nd Ave. All the critters seemed to be in good spirits - they were all either wrestling or daydreaming.
